I am a Mac myself and InspectX has been designed and tested to work on all Apple devices using various browsers.

An important distinction should be made between using an Apple device for InspectX and installing the database on an Apple device.
You can think of InspectX as a locally hosted website that only you have access to. Just like any website it requires two components, the ’server’ and the ‘client’. The ’server’ is where the data is stored, and the ‘client’ is the computer browsing that data. You can use any device to browse and enter data (including Apple devices), but the ’server’ requires components only available on Windows in order to function.

If you want to work entirely offline in the field there are many Windows options available (I prefer the rugged or semi-rugged tablets, many of which are quite affordable on the refurbished/used market). When connected to a network, any Apple device can function as a ‘client’ to use InspectX. See more under NETWORKING.

The InspectX report writing program has been designed for touch input. Since Mac computers do not have touchscreens that means the only Apple device it would work on would be the iPad, which would limit our users by forcing them to buy a flagship device that would be very costly to carry into bilges and harsh workspaces. In addition, we’d have to forfeight a number of networking abilities that enable accessing the database from multiple machines.

I believe our solution is the best of both worlds, which still enables access from Apple devices without forfeiting any features.
This application is comprised of two primary components, a ‘server’ and the ‘client’. The database/server has to be installed on a Windows computer, but the interface portion can be utilized from any device connected to the same network.

My workflow looks something like the following:
I have a Windows tablet with the program installed, but use my Mac’s Safari browser to open InspectX and pre-load specific content for an upcoming assignment. On the day of the survey, I carry the Windows tablet pre-loaded with content to help me collect and confirm data while onboard the vessel. Once completed, I place the Windows device on charge and return to my Mac where I can now see all the information I have collected while onboard. All that is left is a detailed review, possibly adding more photos and the report can be published and sent off to my client, all from my Mac. There’s really nothing you can’t do inside InspectX from your Mac, AFTER you have a Windows machine to host the database.
